Regional News Update

The federal government announced last week that Gold Coast and Perth will no longer classify as ‘major cities’ and will fall under the category of ‘major regional centres’ for skilled migration purposes. Skilled migrants and students will now be able to add Perth and the Gold Coast to their list of destinations in their ‘regional’ visa applications.

This decision has been welcomed with open arms by Gold Coast and Perth governments who have made their case supporting their need to attract more skilled workers and international students. It is expected that this new classification of the two cities will enable its businesses to source skilled workers from overseas if they cannot source locally.
The Federal Government has also announced its decision to increase the total number of regional places from 23,000 to 25,000, as a result of a 124% growth in the number of regional visas granted in the first quarter of 2019.
