COVID-19 Disaster Payment
Update: 16 June 2021
The Covid-19 disaster payment will be a one-off payment available to Australian citizens, permanent residents and temporary visa holders who have the right to work in Australia. As confirmed by Minister David Littleproud, the temporary visa holders will also include international students.
The disaster payment will be available to eligible individuals if they cannot attend work as a result of health restrictions (public health order) imposed by state or territory government and the Commonwealth Chief Medical Officer has determined the location to be a Covid-19 hotspot for the purposes of Commonwealth support.
The payment will apply when restrictions have remained in place for longer than seven days, eligible individuals do not have access to paid leave entitlements through their employer, and are not currently receiving income support payment, state and territory pandemic payment, pandemic leave disaster payment or small business payment for the same period.
The rate of payment is set at $500 per week for people who were engaged in paid employment of more than 20 hours per week, and $325 per week for people who were engaged in paid employment of less than 20 hours per week. To be eligible, the recipients must not have liquid assets of more than $10,000 during the period of the restrictions.
